As the Fall 2011 Quarter comes to a close, I am happy to report that our annual newsletter is in the mail and that another successful academic year is well underway. An encouraging sign is that our undergraduate enrollment and student quality both continue to increase.

The Winter 2012 Quarter will bring our annual ECE Advisory Board meeting and our Graduate Student Recruitment Day, where we bring top graduate student applicants to the campus for a visit. These prospective students typically have fellowship offers from the best schools, and we hope to introduce them to the outstanding opportunities available at UCSB.

Review of the applicants for the two faculty searches we have in progress for this academic year, one in the area of Electronics and Photonics and one in the broad area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, have begun. Continuing to hire talented, motivated individuals, and nurture their growth, is essential to maintaining our record of accomplishment.

The 50th anniversary of the Department will be celebrated in 2012, beginning with an event during the All-Gaucho Reunion, so please watch for events as they are announced. We want to hear from as many alumni as possible as we mark this milestone. With the top 5 NRC department ranking, an outstanding and energetic faculty, high quality students, and a base of exceptional alumni, we have a great deal to celebrate.

We would be pleased to have your support in updating undergraduate teaching labs, endowing faculty chairs or a lecture series, or through contributions to the Roger Wood endowment to support teaching activities in ECE.

As always, we would enjoy hearing from you or having you stop by when you are in Santa Barbara.

Jerry Gibson, ECE Department Chair

Research

The ECE department attracts some of the top faculty researchers from academia and industry. Research in the ECE department is categorized into four focus areas: Communications & Signal Processing, Computer Engineering, Control Systems, and Electronics & Photonics. ECE faculty partner their research efforts with industry, government, outside academic institutions, other UCSB departments, and within the department.

Graduate Studies

The ECE department offers both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The department has three types of degree programs (M.S., M.S. / Ph.D., or Ph.D.) with research emphases in Communications, Control & Signal Processing, Computer Engineering, and Electronics & Photonics.

Undergraduate Studies

The ECE department offers programs leading to degrees of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering (see Computer Engineering). The undergraduate curriculum in electrical engineering is designed to provide students with a solid background in mathematics, physical sciences and electrical engineering.

A wide range of program options are available including communications, control systems, signal processing, computer engineering, microwaves, and semiconductor devices and applications.
